With the new Keeper release, we've made a significant amount of changes listed below. In case you have any questions or would like to know more, please don't hesitate to contact us at any time by opening a ticket here or writing an email to keeper@mpdl.mpg.de.
For those interested in the software behind Keeper and more technical info about our upgrade, please find the detailled changelog at Seafile - we went from version 6.3.12 to 7.1.3.
The changelog in a nutshell:
- Keeper is now reactive! No more refreshing needed after changes
Previously it was necessary to refresh the page to see changes after updates - with the new update all changes are shown in real time.
- View libraries with the new column view mode
We've added the possibility to show the folder structure while working within Keeper. We all have our libraries with countless subfolders - no more getting lost in libraries!
- Manage files through the new context menu by right clicking on any file
Instead of clicking on the dropdown menu for files and folders within Keeper, you can just right click on it now and select the action you'd like to perform.
- Create custom tags for each library and tag your files
While it's been possible to tag files and folders previously, the functionality has received some major improvements. You can introduce new tags for libraries by clicking on the library and the tag icon in the top right of the screen .
Tags could look like this:
This feature comes in handy while working in teams or to manage the daily work even better. Feel free to create custom tags and associate files with those, simply by right clicking on the file and selecting the tag. You can also use multiple tags per file for even more categorizing! In case you want to see all files with a certain tag, just click on the overview bar at the top of the library. An example of a library with tags and the overview bar can be seen below.
- Create documents with the improved markdown editor
The markdown editor has been redesigned and is much more user friendly now than before.
- Search in real-time
Ever wondered where the file went, you've created ages ago? Just use Keeper's in-built search at the top right (web only) and find it in no time. The search is now in real-time and will give you results while you type.
- Un-invite previously invited and active users
You can now un-invite users whom you've granted access to Keeper. Simply go to the Invite page and revoke the access of the user.
Please note: the user's account will not be deleted, but set on inactive. We'd recommend to use this feature only if you are certain it's necessary to remove someone completely from Keeper. The user won't be able to log in anymore at all, also not to work on other libraries.
- Manage granular access rights in encrypted libraries
It is now possible to grant more granular access rights in encrypted libraries. Previously it was only possible to manage rights on library level, now you can also grant rights on folder level.
Please keep in mind that the user receives the most powerful rights in case there's multiple entries. E.g. a user with read&write on library level and read only on a folder will still have read&write rights on the folder. Vice versa, a user with read on library and read&write on folder will have read&write rights on the folder, but only read rights on the library.
Under Share Admin in the menu on the left side of the screen you can manage the permissions for libraries, folders, and files.
- Share libraries and folders with online only rights
Items shared with those new rights will remove the ability to download and to sync the library/folder.
Please note: this won't prevent downloads totally, an experienced user will always find ways to make a copy of accessible files.
We've also added a description for all permission levels to explain the different rights those grant.
- Create a library API token to use with third party programs
It's now possible to create API tokens with limited functionality to interface/interact with third party programs. This is a very technical feature; please contact us for assistance.
- Countless more UI and quality of life improvements and fixes
We have much more improvements planned for the future, but the best features are the ones which help you with your daily work. We encourage everyone to get in touch with us, in case there's something you'd like to see within Keeper. Drop us a note here, send us an email on keeper@mpdl.mpg.de, or talk to us in case we meet in person. :-)
